The rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-medium to create an illusion of movement is Animation. Behind the illusion is the phenomenon of persistence of vision which can be demonstrated in myriad ways with the most common being motion picture or video program. 2D, 3D Animation being based on twelve basic principles was first propounded by Disney animators from the 30s and it was Johnston and Frank Thomas’s work, The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation in 1981 that brought this before the world. The main purpose of these principles was to produce an illusion adhering to the basic laws of physics while at the same time also dealing with abstract issues, such as emotional timing and character appeal.
Prior to starting production of an animation, a preliminary story is decided upon and a story board is created to layout the action scenes by sketching primary frames and writing a note about what is going to be done. The last i. e. the note as an explanation comes handy to review and critique the action. Once the above process is completed, a comprehensive story is then worked out which prescribes action of the scenes in more detail. Master animators then ear mark key frames and proceed to produce them to confirm the character development and image quality. For further testing the rendering and motion techniques, a test-shot which is a short sequence rendered in full color can be taken. A pencil test may be shot to check the motion in its entirety. This shot must be a full motion shot though of low image quality (for example, pencil sketches).
The assistant and associate editors are responsible for the production of frames between the key. In the process of transferring the pencil frames to cells, it is preferred to use ink. In the end, colours are finally applied to these cells. Ideas including the use of story board test shots; pencil testing of conventional animation are now being done on computers. Certain features of computerized animation have also borrowed the use of key-frames and in-between. Despite storyboards being kept on a computer, they can be translated directly over to a computer animation production which in such process, still holds the same functional space. In the usual way of working, there remains a vast difference between the creation of models, detailed description of their movements and the process of rendering relevant to those models in computer animation.
In conventional animation though, creation of models, specified motion and rendering are one and the same thing. During the process of trial and error that defines the character, much of animation; determine their speed and quality of exchanges can be formulated in each of the three stages of computer animation. Within computerized animation, a trial shot is generally a high quality rendering of a model against a single frame of the final product. This can be attempted by simplifying the elaboration of the models used or by using low quality or a low resolution rendering, by perform pencil testing. To display complete movements of still bodies in space while distinguish the relationships among objects, place-holder cubes can be rendered in wireframe which may also produce real-time calculation and playback of the animation. Similarly, an animator can get an idea of finished product's quality in the absence of committing to the final computation using high quality rendering of low complicated models or low quality rendering of highly detailed models or some medium levels of both, the model and render.
The lead animator of a studio is the one who assists the client in formatting and finalizing the animation. It may go to such an extent that clients may sometimes not even know that the solution to a problem lies in its being animated. This, in trade parlance is also called “CONCEPTUALIZATION”. The most surprising fact about it is that it may sometimes completely exclude the very use of animation give the possibility of use of live action video, life performances and sometimes photography as well.
The worth of an experienced animator is best understood during client meetings since it calls for the knowledge of the subject besides great communication skills. Conceptualization over, creative solution provider helps the client achieve their communication goals. For example, if the client wants to sell designer shoes, a commercial ad or a website page might help. It can be done in either ways, but the concept must be able to identify the USPs i.e. its unique sale prepositions. For example, if the shoes are fashionable, comfortable, soft or not. This should be presented to the user with a memorable message be it in a combination of live video, graphics, animation, etc.
As a person of creativity, it is your job to identify the best combination of styles, images, media and statements to meet the client's needs. Despite being an expert animator with the best of understanding of concepts and needs, you may still need to learn more about them. It can be a creative director more experienced in media and animation. If for some reason this seems impossible at the moment, you may just have to make do with clients who require only animation concepts. When meetings customers, it is the animator's duty to locate the problem and solve the same using the means of animation and at the same time keep the audience entertained.
